What Is a PSA 10?

A PSA 10 is a card that has been graded Gem Mint by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), the largest third-party grading company for trading cards. It's the highest number on PSA's 1–10 scale, reserved for cards with essentially flawless centering, sharp corners, clean edges, and a surface free of scratches, print defects, or whitening.

To submit a card, owners mail it to PSA, where graders inspect it under magnification and assign a numeric grade that gets sealed inside a tamper-proof plastic holder along with a certification number — commonly called being "slabbed." A PSA 10 sits above PSA 9 (Mint) and PSA 8 (Near Mint-Mint), and even a single soft corner or slightly off centering is usually enough to drop a card down a grade.

Why It Affects Value

Grading removes the guesswork and disagreement around condition — buyers trust the number on the slab more than a seller's own description. Because PSA 10s are the rarest outcome for most vintage and heavily-handled cards, they command the biggest premium of any grade, often several multiples over a raw (ungraded) copy in similar-looking condition.

Example: a 1999 Base Set Charizard in decent raw condition might sell for $200–400, but a PSA 10 copy of the same card has sold for well over $10,000, since true Gem Mint survivors from that era are extremely scarce.

How to Tell If Your Card Could Grade a 10

Look for perfectly centered artwork (roughly 55/45 or better front and back), four sharp corners with no whitening, clean edges with no nicks, and a surface with no scratches or print lines. Modern cards pulled straight from a sealed pack and stored in a sleeve have the best odds; older or well-handled cards rarely qualify.
