What Is a Secret Rare?

A secret rare is a card whose collector number is higher than the printed total for its set. Look at the bottom corner of a Pokémon card: if it reads 074/073 or 215/203, the card sits past the end of the official set list — it's "secret." Nothing on the checklist tells you it exists, which is where the name comes from.

Secret rares aren't a single art style. Depending on the era they show up as rainbow rares (pastel, textured foil), gold cards (metallic gold borders and artwork), alternate-art full arts, or special illustration rares. What unites them is the number, not the finish — and in every case, they're printed at far lower rates than the rest of the set.

Why It Affects Value

Pull rates are the whole story. A standard holo rare might appear once every few packs, while a given secret rare can sit somewhere around one in every few booster boxes. Combine that scarcity with the fact that secret rares are usually reserved for the most popular Pokémon — Charizard, Pikachu, Umbreon, Rayquaza — and you get cards that routinely sell for 10 to 100 times the value of a regular card from the same set.

Example: Charizard VMAX 074/073 from Champion's Path is the rainbow secret rare of a set that officially ends at 073. Raw near-mint copies have traded in the $130–250 range, while the standard Charizard VMAX 020/073 from the same set sits closer to $50–80. Same Pokémon, same product — the secret rare number is most of the difference.

How to Check for One

Find the small set number printed near the bottom edge of the card. If the left number is larger than the right number, it's a secret rare. If they match or the left number is smaller, it isn't — no matter how shiny the card looks.

The catch is that a set can contain a dozen secret rares at wildly different prices, and rainbow versus gold versus alt-art copies of the same Pokémon are separate cards with separate markets.
