A raw card is any card that hasn't been graded: it's loose, in a sleeve, or in a binder, and it's sold on the seller's own description of its condition. A graded card has been sent to a third-party company — PSA, BGS, or CGC — which inspects it, assigns a numeric grade from 1 to 10, and seals it in a tamper-evident plastic holder, or "slab," with a certification number.
The card itself doesn't change. What changes is who vouches for its condition. With a raw card the buyer takes the seller's word and their photos; with a graded card an independent company has staked its reputation on a number, and that number can be verified against the grader's public database.
Why It Affects Value
Grading removes risk from the buyer, and buyers pay for that. It also creates scarcity that raw listings can't express: thousands of raw copies of a card may exist, but only a handful may have earned a 10. The premium scales steeply with the grade — a 9 might trade near raw prices, while a 10 of the same card can go for several times more.
The tradeoff is cost and time. Grading runs roughly $15–30 per card at common service levels plus shipping both ways, and turnaround can take weeks or months. On a card worth $20 raw, that math rarely works. On a card worth hundreds, it usually does.
Example: the Charizard ex 199/165 special illustration rare from Pokémon 151 has traded around $250–400 raw in near-mint shape, while PSA 10 copies have sold in roughly the $600–900 range. Same card, same set — the slab and the grade account for the difference.
How to Decide Which You Have — and What to Do
If your card is in a sealed plastic case with a printed label and a cert number, it's graded; anything else is raw. Before paying to grade something, work out the raw price first, then check whether the realistic grade it would earn justifies the fee.
