What Is Near Mint Condition?

Near Mint (abbreviated NM) describes a card that looks essentially pack-fresh. Corners are sharp, edges are clean, the surface has no visible scratches or creasing, and centering is reasonable. Graders and marketplaces allow a small tolerance at this level — a single tiny edge nick or a whisper of surface scuffing you have to tilt the card to see is still NM.

It sits at the top of the raw-card condition ladder used by TCGplayer and most sellers: Near Mint → Lightly Played → Moderately Played → Heavily Played → Damaged. Cards with light but obvious edge whitening drop to Lightly Played; visible scratches, dents, or a soft corner push a card further down. NM is not the same as a graded Mint or Gem Mint — it's the raw, ungraded standard, and plenty of NM cards come back from PSA as a 8 or 9 rather than a 10.

Why It Affects Value

Near Mint is the default assumption in almost every price you see quoted. TCGplayer market prices, eBay comps, and app price lookups all describe NM copies unless stated otherwise, so condition below NM is priced as a discount off that number — commonly 15–25% for Lightly Played and 40–60% or more by Heavily Played. Buying a "cheap" copy usually means buying a played one.

Example: a holo Charizard 11/108 from XY Evolutions typically trades around $25–40 in Near Mint, while a moderately played copy of the identical card often sells in the $10–15 range. Same card, same set — the gap is condition alone.

How to Check Your Card

Hold the card under a bright light and tilt it. Look for whitening along the edges and back border, check all four corners for softness, and angle the surface to catch scratches or print lines. Any of those that are visible at arm's length means the card isn't NM.
